A favorite among L2D dancers because of the deep characters that are able to be interpreted, Contemporary dance pulls from a range of techniques and styles to not just produce movement, but rather tell a story. “Developed” in the early 20th century, Contemporary dance follows a set of rules opposite of the rigid techniques of ballet and focuses on fluidity of movement. It can be danced to any style of music and combined with any other dance forms to create an entirely “new” style as well. Contemporary dance has the great ability to portray the stories of a vast topic, such as was the case in the “Woman’s Work” performance done by our Senior Company team that centered on the role of women. Their dance told the story of motherhood, womanhood and the extremely weighted responsibility of that stewardship. It was truly a beautiful portrayal and was danced to perfection.
